What Games Count Towards Wagering? UK Casino Game Weighting Explained

Last updated: 15 June 2026

Here is a question almost no casino bonus guide answers properly: when you play to clear a bonus, does every game count the same? The answer is no, and it is the single most overlooked reason people fail to clear a bonus they thought was easy.

This is game weighting, sometimes called wagering contribution. Understand it and you will spot the bonuses that are quietly rigged against you before you deposit a penny.

What game weighting actually is

When a bonus has a wagering requirement, you have to bet a certain amount before you can withdraw. Game weighting decides how much each pound you stake counts toward that total, depending on which game you play.

It is expressed as a percentage. If a game counts 100%, every £1 you stake moves you £1 closer to clearing the requirement. If it counts 10%, that same £1 only moves you 10p closer. Same stake, very different progress.

Casinos set these percentages themselves, and they vary a lot from one operator to the next. But the typical pattern looks like this:

  • Slots: usually 100%. This is why most bonuses are designed to be cleared on slots.
  • Roulette, blackjack, baccarat and other table games: often 10% to 25%, sometimes 0%. Low-edge games are frequently weighted down hard, or excluded entirely.
  • Live dealer games: frequently reduced or excluded.

These are typical ranges, not a rule. Every casino publishes its own weighting table in the bonus terms, and you should always check the specific one before you commit.

Why it matters so much: the hidden multiplier

Here is the trap. You see a bonus with a friendly 10x wagering requirement. You also know blackjack has a low house edge, so you think you have found the clever way to clear it cheaply. Then you read the weighting table: blackjack counts 10%.

Watch what that does. Say it is a £100 bonus at 10x, so £1,000 of wagering to clear. On slots at 100% weighting, you stake £1,000 and you are done. On blackjack at 10% weighting, every £1 staked only counts as 10p, so to reach £1,000 of countedwagering you actually have to stake £10,000.

That headline 10x just became a real 100x on that game. The low house edge you were chasing is irrelevant, because the weighting buries you long before it helps.

This is exactly why a bonus that looks good on the headline number can be a bad deal in practice, and why the UKGC’s 10x wagering cap, while a genuine improvement, did not fix everything. The cap limits the requirement but does not touch weighting, so the loophole is still open.

The two weighting traps to watch for

Trap one: the excluded game. Some games count 0% toward wagering. If you play one without realising, you can bet for hours and make zero progress on the requirement. Always check which games are excluded.

Trap two: the max bet rule. Many bonuses cap how much you can stake per spin or hand while wagering, often around £5. Go over it, even once, and you can void the entire bonus and any winnings. Weighting and max-bet rules together are where most “I did everything right and still lost the bonus” stories come from.

How to check it in 30 seconds

Before you take any bonus:

  1. Open the bonus terms and find the game weighting or “contribution” table.
  2. Check the weighting for the game you actually plan to play, not just slots.
  3. Find the max bet limit while wagering.
  4. Note any fully excluded games.

If the game you want to play is weighted low or excluded, the bonus is not as good as the headline suggests, no matter how big the number.

Let the maths decide

Weighting is precisely the kind of thing that is hard to eyeball and easy to get wrong. That is what our bonus calculator is built for. Feed in the bonus, the wagering requirement and the game, and it works out the real expected value with the weighting accounted for, so you see whether an offer is actually worth taking before you deposit. If you want the wider picture on reading an offer, our guide on the five numbers that decide if a bonus is worth it walks through the rest.

The casinos count on you reading the headline and skipping the weighting table. Read the table.
